I went to see Rhys Darby last night with Jo and Stef!
Caught a train up after work, it was a pathetically slow train that took about an hour and a half for us to get to Melbourne, and it was packed due to only having about 3 carriages and the air show and Sound Relief being on.
Stef gave her seat up to an old man, except he was really wierd and kept flicking his top lip and making clicking noises, then he start snorting excessivley and start muttering "gross! gross! gross!" The best part of it was when the small boy sitting next to me exchanged a scared/creeped out/WTF?! look with me.
We were planning on having dinner, but the train got there so late that we just bought nando's chips and ran for the tram.
Rhys Darby was spectacular.
He came on stage at the start as Bill Napier (rape ya), who was a New Zealand ranger, and introduced his support act, who I can't remember the name of, but was a disaster. He just kind read crappy 'poems' and did even worse impressions. Someone yelled out "BRING RHYS BACK!" and he just pointed at the side of the stage and went 'he's here' and rhys darby walked back on and they did a bit of banter. I can't figure out it the whole horribleness of the support guy was part of the act, and we were supposed to laugh at his sctick, or if he really wasnt funny. But i've forgotten his name, so research is difficult.
Anyway, Jo and I were really worried at the start, because Stef was annoyed, because SHE misunderstood some ticket buying communication, and she thought that we were going to Flight of the Conchords, instead of 'the ranga'. Who in her words, is 'the least funniest' and if he wasnt funny she was planning on laughing loudly to mock him.
BUT he was hilarious, so it all turned out excellently in the end.
I was amazed at his sound effects, and his hair looks lovely and thick in real life.
[EDIT]: apparently the special guest was Grant Lobban, and he really isnt that funny, because in Perth, the crowd chanted "DAARRR-BYYYY, DAARRR-BYYY!"
